A 17-year-old has been charged with murder and arson in the death of his grandmother. In addition, James Gizzi has been charged with felony cruelty to animals and felony larceny of a motor vehicle.

“If convicted of first-degree murder, the most serious offense for that since he is a 17-year-old would be life without parole,” District Attorney Scott Thomas said.

Deputies said fire crews responded to the Jasper community Monday in reference to a structure fire.

Marjorie Thompson, who lived in the home, died in the fire and a 2016 Toyota Camry was missing from the residence, deputies said.

Investigators issued a warrant on James C. Gizzi, 17, for felony larceny of a motor vehicle.

Deputies said James had driven to his brother’s house in Mississippi, where the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office arrested him.

Gizzi was arrested while pulling up to the home with his brother in the stolen 2016 Toyota Camry, according to the Craven County Sheriff’s Office.

James’ next court appearance will be March 1.

His brother, John Gizzi, 19, is charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
