On Tuesday, a suspected burglar was shot and killed by police during a home invasion on Main Street in Tarboro.
According to WNCT, when they arrived, police confronted a man near the back door of the home and then became involved in “a brief encounter” with the man. During the encounter, an officer fired his gun and struck the suspect.
“Despite extensive first aid efforts, the subject later succumbed to his injuries,” police said. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation will conduct an external investigation of the shooting. The Tarboro Police Department will also conduct an administrative review of the incident. The name of the officer and the suspect will be withheld at the moment.
“Members of the Tarboro Police Department would like to extend our deepest sympathies to all those impacted by this tragedy. We pray for comfort and healing for the families involved and ask for patience and understanding throughout the investigative process. Additional updates will be provided when possible,” police said.
