Obsession was a dope twist on a horror movie, and it came with a very important reminder for everybody watching:
Be careful what you wish for.
This movie was dark, tense, scary, and the type of film that might have you side-eyeing your own relationship by the time the credits roll. Like, you walk in thinking you’re about to watch a horror movie, and you leave wondering if your boo got a secret folder, a burner phone, or a whole villain origin story you don’t know about.
Inde Navarrette, who played Nikki, really made you feel like she was a crazy-ass girlfriend. And I mean that as a compliment. She brought that unpredictable energy where every scene she was in had you thinking, “Alright… what is she about to do now?” She played that role so well, she might make you look over at your own person in the theater like, “You good, right?”
The filmmakers did a great job setting the tone too. It wasn’t just scary for the sake of being scary — you could actually feel the tension building. I found myself talking to Bear through the screen, trying to coach that man through his woman troubles. Bear, played by Michael Johnston from MTV’s Teen Wolf, was going through it, and I was right there with him like, “Bro… no. Don’t do that. Don’t go in there. Don’t text her back. Matter fact, change your number.”
This movie was creepy, uncomfortable, and relationship-damaging in the best possible horror movie way.
And once again, Blumhouse shows why they’re one of the top names in horror. They drop heat in this lane, so I figured Obsession was probably gonna be a good one — and it definitely was.
One thing that really amazed me is that this movie was reportedly made with a budget of less than $1 million and has already grossed over $82 million since hitting theaters a couple weeks ago. That’s a crazy return, and that probably means Hollywood is already thinking sequel.
Now, even though I 1000% recommend watching Obsession, I’m gonna say this right now: I do not need Hollywood to water down an amazing movie with a lazy, money-grab sequel. Some movies hit so hard because they stand on their own. Don’t mess up a good thing just because the first one made money.
But yeah — definitely check out Obsession. It’s dark, it’s scary, it’ll make you question your relationship, and it’s one of those horror movies that actually sticks with you after it’s over.
I’m giving Obsession a 4 out of 5.
