Detroit is shutting off water in every public school after high levels of lead and copper were found in 16 campuses.
Detroit Public Schools Community District serves more than 40,000 students in more than 100 schools. However, as the new school year approaches next week, the district announced Wednesday that it will be turning water off “out an abundance of caution” while tests continue. Officials believe old fixtures are the reason for the high levels of lead and copper and not the water source itself.
Superintendent Nikolai Vitti says he will be working alongside Mayor Mike Dugan to fix the water issue. The water supply is from Great Lakes Water Authority, who say its water surpasses all federal standards.
This has been an issue for a while and it continues.
