I’m usually down for anything connected to the Evil Dead franchise. These movies have always been known for mixing horror, ridiculous amounts of blood and some dark comedy. Which is exactly why I rock with ’em. Unfortunately, Evil Dead Burn took everything that normally makes the series entertaining and somehow turned it into the worst one in the franchise.
Let’s start with the one thing the movie did well.. it was gruesome AF!
The kills were brutal, the practical effects looked nasty and the filmmakers definitely weren’t afraid to lean into it. Gore fans will probably find something to enjoy here because the movie delivers plenty of blood. The problem is.. they get a lil’ extra with it. Instead of the violence adding to the tension or making the story scarier, it often felt like the movie was just tryna see how disgusting it could get. After a while, the gore stopped being shocking and started feeling unnecessary.
That would have been easier to overlook if the movie had a strong story behind it, but the storyline was stupid and never gave me a reason to care about what was happening. In my opinion.. the movie focused too heavily on violent moments instead of building genuine suspense.
The dude Joseph was gettin’ on my damn nerves, too. This man was such a punk throughout the movie that I was HOPING they unalived him. My boy left his own girlfriend to die.. I mean he kicked ROCKS on her. Cold blooded.. smh.
The comedy didn’t work for me either. The Evil Dead franchise has always used humor, but the funny moments normally fit naturally with the madness happening on screen. Here, most of the comedic scenes felt forced. It was like they knew it was supposed to be funny every now & then.. so they randomly inserted jokes and didn’t care if they belonged there or not.
In my opinion it just wasn’t scary enough to be a serious horror movie. Before you try to argue.. GORY and SCARY are two different things. Add that with lame comedy & a weak ahh plot… and you get Evil Dead Burn.
There’s already another one on the way called Evil Dead Wrath, which is supposed to be a prequel.. scheduled to drop in 2028. After watching this one.. my excitement for the next movie is extremely low. If Evil Dead Wrath is anything like Evil Dead Burn, I can definitely wait until it comes to streaming.
Overall, Evil Dead Burn felt like a waste of money to watch in theaters. Hardcore gore fans may want to give it a watch just to experience the ridiculous kills and special effects. Everybody else can comfortably skip the theater and wait to watch it at home.
For me, this was easily the worst movie in the series. I said what I said.
