Screen Time w/ DJ Danny Ocean: Supergirl Review
James Gunn’s DC Universe is really starting to shape up ya’ll.
Supergirl gave me heavy Guardians of the Galaxy vibes.. and I mean that in the best way possible. It had that fun mix of space adventure, weird characters, humor, action, heart and just enough chaos to keep things moving. This didn’t feel like an overly serious superhero movie. It felt… fun.. but it definitely got real at times.
A lot of the story is really about trying to save Krypto, and honestly, that worked for me… but it didn’t feel as ‘high stakes’ as other superhero movies. That’s not necessarily a bad thing tho.
The humor and action were balanced really well. It never felt like the jokes were killing the serious moments and it never got so serious that it forgot to be fun. That’s one thing James Gunn has been good at for a long time and you can feel his fingerprints all over this new DC Universe. He knows how to make superhero movies feel big.. but still give them personality.
Now let’s talk about Lobo.
Jason Momoa as Lobo? Perfect casting. He was born to play this role. Every time Lobo was on screen the movie got better. He was cool.. he was funny.. he was dangerous and easily one of the biggest highlights of the whole film. I wouldn’t even be mad if DC gave him his own movie.. because he definitely stole some scenes here.
The final fight scene was amazing, too. That was the moment where the movie really turned all the way up. The action was clean, the stakes felt big and the visuals were CRAZY. Honestly.. the special effects team deserves some kind of award because this movie looked incredible. The space scenes, the action sequences, Krypto, Lobo.. all of it felt polished. Visually, this joint delivered.
My biggest issue was the main villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills. Buddy just didn’t really do it for me. I wanted the villain to be more memorable.. or more intimidating. Krem wasn’t terrible, but he also wasn’t the part of the movie I walked away thinking about. When Lobo is stealing the show like that.. I feel like the main villain gotta come harder than that.
And that brings me to the weirdest part of my review: I thought Supergirl was a great movie, but I don’t really care to see it again.
That’s not even a diss. Some movies are really good in the moment, but don’t make you feel like you need to run it back. This was one of those for me. I enjoyed it.. I think DC fans are going to be happy with it.. but I ain’t rushing to rewatch it.
Still, this is another strong sign that James Gunn is doing an amazing job with the DC Universe. In my opinion Supergirl was the perfect mix of fun & action.. and it finally feels like DC has some direction again.
Supergirl is funny, action-packed, visually impressive, and Lobo might be worth the ticket by himself.
Screen Time rating: 4 out of 5.
