Screen Time w/ DJ Danny Ocean: Scary Movie 6 Review
I’m just gonna keep it 1000% honest: Scary Movie 6 was a letdown.
And that hurts to say, because I was genuinely excited for this one. You bring back Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Regina King and Anna Faris to the Scary Movie franchise? On paper, that sounds like it’s about to be lit, right? That sounds like the return of the wild, offensive, laugh-out-loud comedy that made the first two Scary Movie films classics in their own lane.
But unfortunately… this joint just didn’t hit like that.
The theater was packed, so it’s obvious the fans of the OG movies were excited. People clearly wanted this movie to be funny. Everybody came in ready to laugh. But for most of the movie, the room was quiet. I’m talking silent silent. There were a few chuckles here and there, but not enough for a movie that’s supposed to be a full-blown comedy event.
The biggest issue for me is that the movie felt all over the place. And I get it — they had over 25 years of horror movies, pop culture moments, internet jokes and viral nonsense to spoof. That should’ve been a goldmine. It just felt like they were trying to cram too much in and hoping something would stick.
A lot of the humor just didn’t land for me. There were moments where I wasn’t laughing — I was more so saying, “Ayo,” or “Pause,” because I couldn’t believe that was supposed to be the joke. The original Scary Movie films were wild, offensive & over the top.. but they were also FUNNY. This one had the wild part sometimes… but not enough of the funny.
Now, let me give credit where it’s due: Regina King was absolutely the standout. Brenda is still hilarious, and Regina stepped right back into that role like she never left. Every time she was on screen we could expect a laugh. She understood the assignment, and honestly, I wish the movie had leaned on her and Anna Farris even more.
There’s also a short Kenan Thompson cameo that might’ve been the funniest scene in the whole movie for me. I’m not gonna spoil it, but that was one of the few moments where I actually felt like, “Okay, there it is. That’s the kind of funny I came for.”
And that’s the frustrating part — there are a handful of funny moments. It’s not completely dead. But they’re too spread out. You’re sitting there waiting for the movie to really take off and it never fully does.
I still think people should go see it, especially if you grew up on the franchise and want to support the Wayans getting their hands back on something they made legendary. That part matters. I’m glad they’re back involved. I’m glad this franchise is back in conversation.
But I would say this: don’t go in with high hopes. Don’t walk in expecting the energy of the first two movies, because at least for me, it wasn’t there.
I wanted this to be hilarious. I wanted to leave the theater quoting jokes. I wanted the whole crowd crying laughing. Instead, I left feeling like the comeback had potential… but didn’t deliver.
For me, Scary Movie 6 gets 2 out of 5 stars.
Not terrible. Not unwatchable. But definitely disappointing.
Final verdict: support the Wayans, enjoy Regina King, look out for that Kenan cameo… but lower your expectations before you buy that ticket.
