Going into Ladies First, my first thought was, “Okay, we might be getting something like What Women Want with Mel Gibson from back in 2000.”
But this movie takes a different route.
The premise is basically: what if the world flipped, and women were the ones in charge? And while it’s definitely played for laughs, the movie does hold a mirror up to the real world and shows how wild certain things look when the power dynamics are reversed. It’s one of those comedies that’s trying to make you laugh, but also make you go, “Yeah… they might have a point.”
Sacha Baron Cohen is one of the funniest people in the world to me. After Borat, Ali G, and all the classic characters and movies he’s been part of, I was gonna at least check this one out no matter what. He’s always willing to look ridiculous for the joke, and that’s part of what makes him work.
Rosamund Pike also did a great job in her role as the H.B.I.C. She brought that boss energy to the movie and made the whole flipped-world concept feel believable enough for the story they were trying to tell.
Overall, Ladies First was cool. Not great, not terrible — just cool. Some of the humor was a little dry, but it worked well enough to get a few chuckles out of me. It had some funny moments, a decent concept, and a couple of performances that kept it watchable.
Would I ever watch this joint again? Probably not.
But if you’re bored on a random weekend afternoon and need something light to throw on, Ladies First is worth giving a shot.
I’m giving Ladies First a 2.5 out of 5.
