In the case of George Floyd, the most recently black man to be killed by a white police officer, an independent autopsy reveals that Floyd died from “asphyxia due to neck and back compression,” which contradicts the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s original exam which “revealed no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation,” saying that “the combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.” Toxicology results can take weeks.

Floyd, 46, passed away one week ago when officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee into Floyd’s neck for more than 8 minutes during an arrest. Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

According to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, Floyd’s cause and manner of death remain pending and is being investigated by local, state and federal law enforcement.
