Trump’s impeachment trial will begin today, January 21st. Republicans and Democrats will come to a decision about rules for the trial and then begin opening arguments.

One of the main issues it a fight over whether witnesses and documents will be allowed. The Democrats want witnesses during this trial. Most republicans do not. Especially since new information is coming to light about Trump’s involvement with other countries that could look bad on his end. If Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell does not call for witnesses in his proposal, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer already said he is prepared to  “force votes for witnesses and documents.”

Trump’s legal team and the House’s impeachment managers, will each have two days for their opening arguments. In Bill Clinton’s trial, each side was given 4 days. Their plan would give each side two, 12-hour sessions to make their arguments.

Trump apparently wants this whole thing done before Feb 4th, when he delivers the State of the Union. Clinton’s trial ran about a month. Trump is wanting a 2 week or less trial. That seems to be pushing it.

The proceedings began at 1 p.m. and will run thru Saturday.
