On Sunday, 17-year-old Paige Winter was bitten by a shark while visiting Fort Macon State Park near Atlantic Beach. According to her GoFundMe page, Paige was waist deep in the water when the shark took her under.

Winter’s father, Charlie Winter, sprang into action when the shark pulled his daughter under. Her grandmother, Janet Winter, wrote on Facebook, “He punched the shark in the face [five] times before it let go.”

Both of her hands were significantly damaged, and her left leg had to be amputated above the knee, according to Eric Toschlog, Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at Vidant Medical Center. As of Tuesday, Paige is in good condition, though she will need additional surgeries on her hand injuries.
East Carolina Brace and Limb Company posted on Facebook that Paige would be receiving free prosthetic assistance from them. The posted read, “All of her Prosthetic and Orthotic interventions will be free of charge and the highest level of 3D scanning and manufacturing coupled with state-of-the art designs including bionic technologies will be applied to ensure optimum Rehabilitation outcomes.”

“We are pleased to share that Paige is resting well after returning to the operating room at Vidant Medical Center on June 4, 2019. While we understand she will require additional operations, our Paige is a fighter. Her courageous spirit continues to be a beacon of light for all of us,” the family of Paige Winter said in a statement.
