A man has been charged with the murder of his sister-in-law, who died en-route to the hospital after he stabbed her during a domestic dispute at a home in Hubert on Tuesday.

The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office says at 5:25 P.M. on Tuesday, deputies and Swainsboro Police officers responded to a reported stabbing and domestic dispute at Lot 143 at Patriots Place Mobile Home Park.

First responders found a woman, Christy Lynn Godette, age 31, had been stabbed with a knife. An ambulance rushed Godette to the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, but she died on the way there.

Detectives say the stabbing happened during an argument between Godette and Derrick Lamell Bennett, age 32. The subject of their argument is unclear, but they both lived at the home where the stabbing happened.

Godette’s mother and 3 children under the age of 11 were also inside the home when the stabbing happened.

Bennett was arrested without incident, and was charged with one Open Count of Murder.

Bennett is being held in the Onslow County Detention Center under no bond pending his first court appearance, scheduled for June 5.

Deputies say Bennett has previous arrests for Assault Inflicting Serious Injury (2), Injury to Personal Property, Resist Public Officer and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
