East Carolina University has been making a lot of changes lately, and here comes another one.

ECU Chancellor Cecil Staton announced his resignation in an email to ECU faculty, staff, and students on Monday morning. In the email, Chancellor Staton says he will step down on May 3, 2019. Chancellor Staton will remain on as an advisor to the president and the interim chancellor through June 30, 2019 to assist during the transition period.

Staton goes on to write, “I am proud of what we have accomplished together over the nearly three years we have been part of this wonderful community.” He adds,”I want you to know that Catherine and I are very grateful for our time at ECU. I a grateful to have worked with wonderful students, an enormously dedicated faculty and staff, a terrific leadership team, and lots of Pirate alumni, friends and governance members who understand the importance of ECU to North Carolina. As I like to say, if North Carolina didn’t have ECU, it would have to go out and build it tomorrow. Catherine and I will always be proud Pirates!”

A news conference is set for Monday at 11:30am at ECU.
