As Hurrican Florence heads for the Carolinas and West Virginia as a category 4 storm, several counties are preparing for evacuation. Despite the mandatory evacuation, the prisoners of one prison are being for held in their sells.

South Carolina Department of Corrections spokesman Dexter Lee said, “Right now, we’re not int he process of moving inmates. In the past, it’s been safer to leave them there.” The prison is located in Jasper County and currently hold 934 inmates. The staff who are pre-scheduled to work during the storm are not allowed to switch, they must work.

These are similar tactics that were practiced during Hurricane Katrina and that ended in a “devastating” experience. People are calling to action to prevent the things that happened with Hurricane Katrina to happen with Hurricane Florence. Despite multiple tweets, memos, and phone calls, no updates have been given on the prisoners’ evacuation status.
