Two former officers and one current officer of Greenville Police Department are suing a city council member claiming she interfered with their jobs.

According to WITN, “The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association says officers Brock Flannery, Joshua Smith, and Travis Brinkley were members of the Greenville Police Department’s gang unit who were targeted by Counsilwoman Kandi Smith.” A news release was issue saying Smith was sued “for tortious interference with their contracts of employment and obstruction of justice.”

The PBA were the ones who made sure the police department took disciplinary action against the officers, two of whom which were fired. Executive director of PBA, John Midgettes says Smith schemed to interfere with police operations, which includes “staging encounters attempting to provoke officers , unreaonsably and maliciously confronting officers, seeking to incite officers” and so much more.

WITN reports, the police association was joined by two dozen officers in announcing the filing of the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims counsilwoman Smith filed a complaint against the officers after an assistant school superintendent for Nash-Rocky Mount Schools was arrested on May 13th. The lawsuit also says Brinkley and Flannery were fired, while Officer Smith was suspended.

As of Monday (today), Smith says she wouldn’t comment just yet because she hasn’t received the lawsuit. The City of Greenville says it doesn’t comment on pending litigation, according to a spokesman, “we will respond in a reasonable amount of time” to public records requests concerning the officers’ employment with the city.
